Mission Statement

I'm 42 years old, married, and I have a three year-old daughter. I'm a college grad, I worked within my field (political science) for four years before I figured out I hated it, and I now have a career that I never wanted or planned for but I've been doing it for over fifteen years.

I have a nice house, two nice cars, and a lot of equity in the house that I can't liquidate right now because of the market. That will change.

I sailed in college, crewed quite a few races, owned a small (23') boat for two years before I got married; I sold the boat soon after.

My goal in life is this: on my 58th birthday, not quite a year after I will have dropped my daughter off at college, I want to be sitting at anchor in the North Minerva Reef, on my own boat. I plan to be eating a birthday meal of fresh-caught lobster and a bottle of wine that I picked up along the way. For the record, that date will be July 3rd, 2023.

You're all invited.

Great plan! Sounds like it'll be an awesome evening... (cool people were born on July 3, my brother is one of them).

The simple fact that it's the eve of our celebation of Independance from England, makes that date even more special.

I'll take you up on that invitation and mark my 16 year calendar.

I agree with JR - why wait for 16 years? You've already made one career mistake, follow your dreams and forget what your dad told you. Your daughter will understand.

My daughter might understand, but I most definitely would not forgive myself for failing to save for her education. I don't want her to be burdened with loan repayments as soon as she graduates. Have you guys seen what college costs these days? My alma mater is closing in on $40K/yr; Lord knows what it will cost fifteen years from now.

I'm glad I'm done with those college bills. Go for it when the time is right. I'll bring the wine, you bring the lobster.
