maybe there's already a thread on best authors

but couldn't find it. best authors, nautical fiction.

if it already hasn't been done, of which i would be very surprised with this sophisticated literary bunch i would suggest patty o'brian is tops.

Hoffa-

There are about 300 threads on recommended books... both reference, historical, and fiction.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

whoops -when i did a cursory dig, all i found was boat books, as in non-fiction, how to, not authors and book, like heart of darkness, that sort of thing. if there really are that many threads, would be nice to have a sticky, fiction, non-fiction, classical, etc. maybe i'll get it for xmas

sailhog, this one's for you: ted geisel drawing the grinch:

hmmm, so the sticky above has buried in it some fiction. I was surprised at the support for o'brian, but maybe that's because of the advanced age of most people on this forum.

it's a shame that you will never see the like again, at least not in the us market. hopefully the uk publishers will still print that kind of stuff...

Salty tales

Great idea for a thread.

Of the many -
Patrick O'B - Twenty classics, pure salt tinged time travel.

Most of Conrad

Erskine Childers - The Riddle of the Sands - Probably the first spy story but really an advanced lesson in shoal water sailing. Written by a fascinating man and freely available on guttenberg.org.

On the factual side you cannot beat Shacketlon's 'South'. Again, this is free on guttenberg.

For what it's worth and most of this has been covered in the recommended reading thread (both fiction and non)...

O'Brien - I starting reading the whole series a year or so back. After the first book I was totally entranced, after six beginning to get a tad Deja Vuish, after eight, gave up and never went back. Maybe I'll try again sometime but I'm not in any hurry.

Conrad - everything and anything. There is a new Conrad biography just recently published, looking forward to reading that over NewYear break.

Childers - Riddle of the Sands is a wonderful book. For me one of the best sailing related tales ever related. Over the last weekend I read most of the "Shadow in the Sands" which is a follow on but not written by Childers. Good read (not quite finished) but not up to Childers.

To be honest I'm not all that keen on sailing related fiction. Occasionally find something worth reading but prefer to stick with the non fiction. On board most of the fiction I read is crime fiction.
