Center board jams..Help

I have a 1981 25'' O''Day and sometimes the center board jams (or the cable/line snags on a burr somewhere in the thru way). Can anyone offer suggestions what to look for, how to fix. Also where can I get replacement stainless steel cable (attaches to center board fitting) and swaged on nylon line (comes up to cockpit cleat). Thanks for any help. Bruce

Center board jams..Help

I once owned an O''Day 23 with a centerboard. I had similar problems until I replaced the pivot pin. If the pin is worn excessively and there is too much play, the board can get hung up. The pin is made out of nylon or derelon and measures approximately 1 inch in diameter and 4 inches long. The pin can only be replaced by removing the retainer plates on the bottom of the keel. This is not a difficult job (while on the hard) and you can replace the other hardware while you have it apart. Any rigging shop should be able to duplicate the cable setup.

I really appreciate your help. Everything you described seems accurate. Do you know where I can buy a replacement pivot pin? Can I use a stainless steel pin? Thanks- Bruce

At the time, I purchased the pin from an ex-employee selling new and used O''Day spare parts. The pin is made from this "sacrificial" type material so the board is not damaged, I would not suggest that SS be used. I would disassemble the centerboard and measure the pin and check the internet to find a supplier of plastics. You might try a Berry Bearing (an industrial supplier) or WW Grainger. Rots of Ruck.

The adventure continues...Today I did drop the centerboard and inspect. No signs of wear but the hole was 1 1/8" dia and the pin was 1" dia. I had a new pin customed milled to 1 1/8" dia (at 4pm Friday for $25 including tip). When I removed the holding plate screws (that hold the pivot pin wedges) some sea water came out. What''s the best way to deal with this? Thanks- Bruce
