(Reviving an oldish thread alert, but...)

To address a couple of points raised in this thread:

I believe all the Spirit yachts are fitted for lifelines - if you look at the port rail in the photo of the 100, you can see the fittings for mounting stanchions. The company told me that the Spirit 37 was given an IRC rating without the lifelines fitted, using a gennaker and accepting the cockpit coaming as sufficient safety.

Tiller on a 46 - the (current) 46 only displaces 4.5 tons with 100% sail area of 684sq ft, and there's a lot of length in that stern overhang. The accomodation on the 46 is more like you'd expect on a mainstream boat of about 35'. As both designer and custom builder, Spirit told me they are careful during commissioning to fine tune helm balance to be 'just so' - IIRC including even re-shaping the rudder blade if necessary.

I visited the yard when the first 70, 'Ghost' as it became, was in build (dreaming of success that didn't materialise ?), when they were still based at Saxmundham. They struck me as careful craftsmen and good people.
