A real Roman Road from the year 400 B.C.

One of the reasons I haven't been much here is that this year we went to Spain to race Giulietta, and did quite well, considering, and the agenda is quite full again soon.

Anyway, on the last few days, my wife and my kids came over to where we were, and we drove home, thru the North of Portugal.
We ended up spending one day more in the North. Its absolutely gorgeous over there, besides I had promised Fred I would show him one of the oldest known official roads in the World, the Roman road of the Geres, and its famous MILIARES or as you say in English, milestones.

See Miliares here in Portuguese nice photos

and Milestones in English Here

Anyway, so we have this Roman road in Geres mountains, in a natural park, that you can actually drive thru, they covered the coblestones and the stones with dirt to preserve it and you get to drive your car in a road that is 2408 years old. So far nothing to be excited about...except...

Hundreds of Miliares, or milestones you can actually touch and feel in your hands, some still possible to see the engravings, and ...a bridge that dates back to the year 400B.C. and yes, you drive over it...talk about good engineering...

In the middle of it, up in the mountain, we went to this restaurant that stays right at the very highest point, breathtaking views, excellent meals and superb wine...you guys need to try this, forget Disney World...I'm telling you...

Anyway...here a few photos.

Enjoy.

The road begins like this...

and its covered with dirt, but underneath the original stones are still there..

Then suddenly you turn and face this...

These cylindrical stones, yes they are real Roman milestones and were the Photoshop and the grafitty of way back then.

They told stories, indicated distances and were respected and preserved,as the information was very usefull.

Fred wanted to touch them and feel the power of MAN....well he did

A little all over water fountains and falls were present, the place is very moist

Here a glass thing tells people wjhat the milestones said, and what distances they indicated...

Here where to go to Asturias and where to go to Braga.

the distances are exactly correct to an error of 10 meters!!!! Figure that out..2400 years ago...3 years before the GPS!!

THEN.....BAM.....

the 2400 yo bridge....cool huh?

We then stopped for lunch...check this place....

breath taking views...absolutely beauuuutifull..

then.....Luis sees the cows....and Fred took hom to see the cows...
I was watching my dear boys...I was sooo happy, we classified third the day before by the way...

By the way, the funny looking buildings are 800 year old barns where even today they store the corn to dry it.

Another little tour over my beautifull old small country, so rich of traditions and history that makes me so proud.

Thank you guys, hope you enjoyed something different...

PS, so no idiot gives me a bad rep, because this post has nothing to do with sailing...

here you go..me dressed for war...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I guess it's okay if you're into exotic natural beauty. Why don't they tear out that old road and put in a nice four-lane toll road?

Great pics! No wonder everyone has fought for that land.

Nice Benz, too.
