I doubt that onboard treatment of ballast tanks with chlorine is likely to be vastly superior to the current policy of dump and fill, due to the fact that salt water is being treated. It certainly would be safer from a stability point of view, though. That's not to say that there are not other technological recourses that might well be much more effective. It's certainly a matter for further discussion at the international levels.

I'll withhold a tempting entry into a discussion of what invasive species we deem harmful and which we deem beneficial. There is certainly a great deal of unacknowledged cognitive dissonance going around on the subject. (g)

It is a great story, but don't forget the part about Marty Johnson dying. Titan is part of Crowley Marine and I know that his death hit everyone very hard, including the president of the company. One of their new big barges was named after Marty and his wife christened it at a very emotional ceremony. A very good friend of mine has ties to Titan and sends me pics of their new jobs, what they accomplish is nothing short of amazing.

Amazing story, and very well written. Very sad about Marty Johnson, but it sounded like he loved the job and knew the risks.

As for ballast water, I thought there was a push for legislation to require ships to sterilize with ozone before entering US waters. As chlorine is way to corrosive for steel tanks and has it's own toxicity/environmental issues.

Val,

I was wondering if you ever got the pictures on Titan salvage.. Or if you could point me to the "other forum." I found this story interesting (obviously)and would like to read more.

Yes, I got the fellow's PowerPoint presentation, and it has a lot of interesting stuff...even for a PowerPoint presentation. PM me with a valid e-mail and I would be happy to forward it to you, as I don't have the time to pull it apart and post the photos to a picture-sharing site, and then post the links here.
