Coffins with masts? 10' around the world?

Around in TEN - Home page

Saw this on another forum. Anyone heard of it? 10-foot sailboats "race" around the world, 5 guys signed up so far?

Westward around, no Cape Horn, but Pacific and Indian Oceans nonstop? Puh-leeze tell me it's April First, but my calendar says not yet, so evidently they mean it.

Oh, Lordy. Dreamers are free to dream, but I hope they all sign a "DNR" (do not Rescue) before departure, no poor maritime nation's Coast Guard should have to go looking for them in mid-ocean in bad weather.

Some guy crossed the atlantic in a five footer. He was six foot something if I remember right. Couldn't even lay down. Comparetivly, ten foot would be spaceus.

I'd sponsor it by taking out a life insurance policy on the skipper.

Nuts.

I think these guys, and the other publicity seeking whack jobs like Vann in TinCan and Reid in 1000 Days, need to take out a bond to pay for any SAR costs for their eventual rescue attempts.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I don't think we should be mixing these guys with the attention seekers you are mentioning above..

First these guys are in an organized race, with boats that to me, albeit small seem to be true boats for the task...second the race has a scheduled plan to start in 300 or more days so more are in, and things get thought out too, I see already 3 Americans one Belgian and one Israeli, and you look at them and they seem to look like real sailors, not a skinny bastard and Larry the cable guy....they have a support boat, and look at the boats...they look like self righting bubbles with a sail....they seem to be done for this...have a close look.

These seem like record seekers rather than losers

I hope thy go and do it..their boats look like the part.

Don't mix them with the rest, please

Good point...they're definitely not in the same class as David Vann or Reid Stowe. I hope they find the funding they need to get going... At least these guys recognize the need for having a support boat along... so I guess they're not being as foolish as Mr. Vann.

I'm not going to condemn them for it. I do have a fairly large "why?" running through my head. The old "because it's there" doesn't seem to fit. And it would stretch my personal notion of sailing to nowhere in particular, rather a bit. Let's hope that their sponsorship might include a "chase" vessel for safety's sake.

Sailaway-

They do have a support ship that will be following them from what I read.

Chase boats and well designed or not, my dinghy is bigger. It's still nuts.
Publicity stunt sailing belongs on SA, not here. That's why I'm here, not there.
