You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

It might be better described as speeding powerboat kills eagleray. The eagle ray was jumping out of the water and was killed by a boat. Sad for all concerned. When we were sailing around Marathon several years ago we saw several eagle rays jump out of the water. Of course we were going slow on a sailboat. I do joke about suicide deer that seem compelled to jump out in front of cars. It is easy to ignore the fact that the deer that I hit in my car was just crossing the road and I was the one going down the road a 60 mph.

What's also odd, back in the late 80's, I was on a dinghy with a small outboard, motoring east of Marathon and had a ray jump immediately in front of my bow. I'm thinking that either the rays are resting or feeding and are startled by the boats in the immediate area.
