Captains license & seatime documentation
 

I am considering getting my 6-pack captains license and am trying to find out if my time served aboard two different ships while in the U.S. Navy will count toward my required 350 days of seatime. I have searched the forum without any luck, and couldn't find a definitive answer on the USCG's website. With all the captains on this forum, I thought someone here might be able to give me an answer.

The answer if probably yes, but a certain portion of your sea time has to have been within the last several years, you can't reach back 10 years for all of it, for example.

Google 46CFR Parts 9 and 12 and you may find the answer, though I'd think it would be on the web if you put the right search terms in, like "recency of time/ coast guard license" or similar.

IIRC, for the OUPV, you need 90 days in the last three years of the 360 total days required.

For clarification of the 'rules' on this, I would call your nearest USCG Regional Exam Center and ask them. I'd give you the link but it is being blocked due to not enuf posts. Google USCG Regional Exam Center or STCW...
has addresses and phone numbers for the REC's, application forms, etc.
Please let us know what the REC says since I've seen this Navy question come up before.

I've emailed the CG based on your link and will let you know what I hear. I spent a lot of time at sea on a destroyer tender, and then a guided missile cruiser and wouldn't mind being able to use the sea time. And while I've been sailing since I was a kid, it's going to be tough to document a lot of it.

Apart from what type of time qualifies; what qualifies as documentation?; esp. if you are on your own boat?

Its been my understanding that the USCG will consider time on your own boat. Since there is no way to prove the amount of time served on your own boat, and even attempting to contact previous captains would be difficult, they basically accept whatever you put down and swear as being true (not condoning fibbing here).
