TSA Announces Emergency Shut Down Of US East Coast Ports
March 31, 2008
Washington, D.C
The US Transportation Safety Administration in Washington, D.C. announced today an emergency declaration to suspend all private vessel activity from Friday, April 18 through Thursday, May 1st, 2008. The exclusion zones will include all harbor entrances, fairways and commercial births. The TSA in conjunction with the US Coast Guard will be installing under water detection devices in the vicinity of the busiest US Ports to help insure the safety of commercial shipping and the Port work force.
The TSA took the unusual emergency steps in advance of the traditional boating season on the East Coast in an effort to minimize the disruption to private vessel owners and merchants. "Vessels may apply for operational permits during the exclusion period but must be piloted by registered boat captains with appropriate documentation and tonnage requirements for the vessel's configuration," said Margaret Watkins with the US Coast Guard office in Baltimore, MD. The Ports affected include but are not limited to: Boston, Newark, New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, New Orleans and Houston.
