Talking Gaugin interest in a multi forum rally/race event.

I yak at a lot of cool folks on various sailing forums including this one. I'm thinking of organizing a rally, race event in the PNW this Summer. I'm thinking it would be an informal race from Flounder Bay (outside Skyline Marina) out to and around Whale Rocks in the San Juan Channel, out to and around Smith Is and back to Flounder Bay for a raft up rally. Bob Perry has graciously volunteered to help assign PHRF ratings to those (like myself) who don't have them. The event would be very laid back in cruiser style. I'm thinking the race would be a Time On Distance affair with each boat clocked over and back instead of the normal fight at the line. We could also do two starts, one for those who wanna do the traditional start and one for the cruisier folks who don't care for fighting for a starting position. All racing would be strictly voluntary. The course would be a triangle affair so the W/L boats wouldn't have all the advantage. If anyone would be interested or have some ideas, post here or PM me.

I won't be attending unless someone has alot of new info on that norther passage route that I don't know about.

One format you may consider if this moves ahead, is one that we use a lot. Measure the distance of the course (call it 10 NM) then apply the PHRFs of all boats and do a reverse start. ie... slowest boat starts first (PHRF of 200) at say 9:00 next boat has a PHRF 180 starts 200 seconds later (20 secx10nm), etc... With this system you can race boats of varying sizes and abilities without starting line issues. "In Therory" all boats should finish at the same time giving everyone a competitive feel and promoting sportsmanship.

We have used this system at our club a lot and seems to work very well.

That's an interesting concept and one to consider. Yeah, IL is a bit far from the PNW.

If the timings are right I would be interested in participating in some kind of race/event.

Cool, I was thinking a pursuit race where the slowest boats start first and each faster boat starts at a specified time according to their PHRF rating and the distance, as suggested by T34C above. We could sail a shorter course as well, say out and around Cypress Island, to give more party/meet/greet time.

I'm with T-34C; stuck in Lake Michigan (Whitehall MI) By the way, T, A neighbor of mine has a mid-sixties version (tiller) of your Tartan 34. It is also a nice boat. They've sailed it one season w/out mizzen.

Clearly a man of discerning taste.

Many T34C's came with tillers. Very few were yawl rigged. It couldn't be any older than '67. that is when the design was inked and Hull#1 is in Germany.

It's a sixty-something. Atomic four almost in the center of the cabin under a console. Center board. Fast enough! Seems to have weather helm but, being yawl-ignorant, I'm thinking lack of trim and lack of mizzen could have something to do with that?

sorry about drifting off-subject
