I beg to slightly differ Falcon.........when attacked or under the possibility of attack.......I would MUCH rather be in the company of friends......
Personally......If it were me watching a party of my "group" being attacked..I'd be the first to his attempted rescue. I quote a dear friend of mine: His name is John....."Greater love hath no man than this....That he lay down his life for his friends."

France seems to have changed from old all talk to action. Good for the French people. There are time when all things NATO is no action talk only. Action speaks louder than words. My guess, if that were to be US cruise ship and crew, a carrier battlegroup would have been parked there already.

Not if it's a recent production boat, no... On Superior, you have to worry more about the lake than the pirates.

Re: The French. Despite the fun had at their expense, they DO have some very effective elite troops, and have in the past proven to be quite ruthless at obtaining a favourable conclusion.

Can't imagine what would happen if an Israeli yacht was taken...the Somalis would rue the day, if they even got the chance to ponder what the hell had hit them.

Pardon me if I allow myself to ponder that had it been US marines performing the same operation we'd be hearing wide-spread condemnation of violating Somali territorial imperatives and rampant cowboyism. As to the French; yippe-ki-yay! Welcome back.

I'll agree with you on that. One aspect in France's favour though was the blessing of the local governor who appears to want the thugs cleaned out.

Regarding the carrying of small arms (and it has been discussed at length), arms of every sort are a dime a dozen in that part of the world including AK-47's, machine guns and RPG's. Not only are the thugs heavily armed but possibly high on khat. One issue that seems to be overlooked is what happens if you do shoot someone (i.e. an individual bandit as opposed to a group of pirates) and have to deal with local authorities. Many third world countries are corrupt as hell and don't have a justice system worthy of that name. There's a good chance you will find yourself (and crew possibly) locked up in the slammer for an indeterminate period - as for your boat?

The baiting idea brought up earlier is a hell of an interesting one... What if you took six SEALS gave them a PT boat rigged up with fake sails etc. to look like a beautiful luxury yacht, but instead of a windlass on the foredeck it turns out that it's a .50 cal..... Compared to how much money we spend on other military BS having a couple of these boats cruising around pirate infested waters would be cheap. And you have to think it would make the pirates at least think twice...

It seems like the somalis just got a sailboat with some rich French pricks on it. I'm not saying I'm "blue collar" but if your joe blow was captured by a somalie pirate they would be dead or locked up in some pit.

I live in an area where the highest immigrant population of somalis exists. These people lived in a world where eating a bucket of @#$% is a delicacy..

It's not like there is a lack of information about this part of coastline and the piracy that takes place.

Regardless of if you're with your friends or not... You're all defenseless.

That's all I was trying to convey.
