Your Moderator(s)

I have decided to put this in general discussion for all to read or not to read, as you see fit. This is not a rant. THis is the growing frustration I have had to deal with which seems to have come to a head.

There are many places on the internet to discuss sailing. THis, of course, is one of them. We may even be the largest... I do not know. But we (Cam and I) have made a sincere effort to try and create an environment that is fun, informative, and realtively family safe. I think that is what has seperated sailnet from many of the other sites. If you want no laughs and dry information (and I mean that with NO dissrespect) SSCA and Cruisers Forum are two places to go. They do not tolerate much of the joking and prodding we do amongst friends here. If you want almost no moderation and free to use whatever means you want (profanity, verbal attacks, nudity, etc) I have found that Sailing Anarchy is more along your lines. It is almost un-moderated. What we have tried to do is set the in-between. I do not have to flip off my monitor when my kids walk in, nor do I mind having some fun with others here that I would call friends. Most of the other sites I have found really are not any good.

But I have spent litterally countless hours up here, much to the dismay of my wife and family and business. I have done it to help out and give back to this community that I am so passionalte about. It is the same reason I am the Technical Editor for Mainsheet (Catalina).... to give back. I get NO money for this. Nothing. This is PURE volunteer work to make our (all of our) passions a little better.

Another thing of note is that I did not ask to be a moderator, Sailnet asked me. I am not sure why, honestly. THere are much better sailors on here and people with considerably more experience... and some of them lie. But at that time I basically begged and pleaded for Cam to come back and I think he did it because of me. Thank you Cam, he really makes this a much better place. He has twice the knowledge I do and a lot more experience.

But guys (and gals), I am just a sailor, like you. That is all. I make good decisions, I make bad decision. But never, not once, have I ever made a decision without trying to be compassionate and thoughtful in the response and action. Never once have I tried to do something innapropriate. Even on many times when I should have been nasty, I have not. THere are countless threads that I have passed up and not responded to because of my concern for how my responses would be interpreted. Thus, I find myself forced to take a back seat to topics I feel strongly about. Instead of getting to participate in what I enjoy, I manage what I don't.

I cannot tell you the countless times I have had to deal the screaming, bickering, name calling, pornography, phone calls to my house and business, etc. I have gotten MANY nasty PM's - probably twice as many as Giu. THere is no reason for that. THere is no reason to call me or Cam out on the open net. You can make your points to us without an open crucifixion. We do get PM's.

If at any point, ANY POINT, you feel you would prefer a different moderator, I urge you to let me know and I will gladly step down and hand over the reighns. I have done my time and I have given back. I feel no remorse in knowing I at least tried to help out our community. Moderators are chosen by the administration. You don't choose to be a moderator, they choose you. You can PM them and you do not even need to let the general population know (or me) that you want a change. I have no ego to hurt here, no pride to be brushed aside. I have no money to be lost and nothing to gain. As I said, all I have tried to do was help.

Regards,

- CD

You have done and continue to do a very good job. The place would not be the same without you. I hope that you stick around and keep up the good work.

CD and Cam,

You guys do a great job. Many thanks!

Folks,

Moderators are a bit like referees (except in this case they are UNPAID!) When you sign-up to SailNet, you agree to abide by their calls. If you don't like their calls, just like in sports, TOUGH LUCK. Usually the calls are fair and reasonable, but they are only human and are exercising subjective judgement. Every now and then you may find some cause to quibble or disagree over a call. But that is no reason to take them to task in a way that ruins their day.

Just roll with it and move on, like a true good sport would.

CD,
I think you and CAM do fantastic jobs and would be sorely missed if you did not stay on as a moderator. That being said, I cannot begin to comprehend the time you spend or the abuse you get because of that role. If you want to leave to ease that burden, that is perfectly understandable, but I cannot believe there is anyone here on Sailnet who would want to see you step aside for any other reason. Keep up the great work.

You fellows do a great job. Sailnet is a community and the policing that is done here is similar to Andy and Barney. You let people be themselves as long as they don't hurt others. You guys really care and try hard to make it a better place and I really appreciate it. Feal free to moderate me at any time. (hey, watch it buddy)
