I am sure someone was driving even if it was the
autopilot. The
autopilot does not know about paper
charts though. Sounds to me like like another case of over-reliance on chart plotters that should not have happened. What about keeping watch?
The problem I have with ocean passages is that you can get lulled into accepting the 'advice' from a chart-plotter/GPS such that a rigid watch schedule is not adhered to.
Radar would not likely have picked this up but perhaps forward scanning sonar would have as well as an awake person at the helm.
