Guy, I really want to thank you for the gesture.
It was really nice of you to decide part of a sentimental object and give it away to someone, who will now keep the sentimental value it has. Kind of like prepetuating it..I guess. I will make sure of that, and that he rspects what the hat means and why it means...it means that somehow, farway originating paths have crossed, and have come together for some reason..that's what the hat means and I want him to understand that..which I believe he has..
Sometimes, the little things just like your analogy to the "first knife" have unforgetable meanings..
That hat, to a 10 yo boy is not just a hat, its a REAL hat. A symbol of something...he wore it proudly (altough it falls off his head), its just like the first knife you are right..
I woke up earlier today, and went check Fred and he was sleeping with the hat near him.
He was all proud of it....Fred is a kid of the sea, he has been at sea all his life and doesn't know any other way. For him the hat represetsa future, and I am sure that him, just like me, looks at the hat as a fix to a dream, and his mind is all working out imagining driving a tanker or a large sailboat..
Sometimes we take things for granted, and I am sure that for Fred, who being on a boat is something granted as he does it so many times, doesn't have the aura of a dream, he doesn't dream about boats, he doesn't dream about the sea... for him the sea, boats and all that are fortunately available in his day, so his sea dreams are almost inexistent...but the hat, brought new dreams, sea related dreams, that he didn't have before....he saw himself as a Navy Captain...I had never tought of that....
I THANK YOU for giving my kid a new dream, that is still related to the ocean and the sea and wind..Thanks
Ales
