talismansigns is on a distinguished road
Hello

Hi All,

I am new to sailnet so I will start by saying hello. I have a new to me 1973 22’ Oday sail boat that I am getting ready to launch. I have a mud flat mooring in Duxbury Harbor, MA. I am new to salt water sailing and look forward to sharing my questions and experiences here.

I have been lurking here for a few months. Thank you all for the info and knowledge I have gained here! And I would like to share a solution that my help any one of you in the near or distant future.

I recently replaced the shorted wires that run up my mast to the light on the top. Along the way using the original wiring as a tether/pull line, it got stuck and separated from the new wire… The mast is full of foam… You know the drill….

So….. After exhausting the Internet for a solution without much luck I solved the problem by making a 30’ long PVC drill bit.

Here is a link to some photos and a brief description:
Mast Drill

I hope it can save someone a little bit of time and/or frustration if you happen upon this situation yourself some day. It is an easy and inexpensive solution to a very frustrating problem.

I can't post a link because this is my first post but if you would like to see it, just send me an IM and I will happily shart it with you. I will try to get my 10 posts and then edit this post to add the link. It has pictures and a brief description.

Welcome Joe,
Sounds like a very clever solution to a commonly encountered problem. Looking forward to your photos.
I just hope you didn't shove a bunch of crap back up the mast again in order to keep it quiet.

Talismansign;
You have the mail buoy watch from 1800~2400.
Report to the bow at 1800 in life jacket, hard hat and holding a boat hook.
Your job is to snag the mail buoy so that we can get our mail.
Oh! And we need a can of Relative Bearing Grease also.

Reporting for mail duty sir.

Knothead, I didn't remove all the foam. I just bored a hole in it and left the "bit" inside the hole to act as a cable raceway. The pictures would show it better.

2 posts down, 8 to go....

What kind of foam was it, soft cushion foam or the hard stuff?
How was it attached to the inside of the mast?

Use two different posts to answer the questions.

Joe, welcome to sailnet. Joe is my dads name...we sailed an O'day 22 for 20 years before moving to a Pearson 27... they are GREAT boats. We still sail the O'day on occasion and i will hate to part with her. We also ran new VHF and anchor light cables through the mast. Lucky for us the line didn't pull apart though.

Would love to see any other projects you've done to your 22.

The foam was probably cut to just bigger than the inside profile and pressed in. I innitially tried to pust the whole lot out but had no luck.

Thanks Joel. I can't wait to get it on the water. I have to 4 windows pulled out right now. They were leaking around the frame and around the glass. I will take pictures of the progress. They were a pain to get out...

I like the look of the pearsons. I actually bought the ODay 22 based on price and size and trailerability this time around.
