S/v Truant

Jeezs. That's sad. I grew up on TRUANT. She was my education. Everything I know, love and am today I owe to her and her skipper, P. T. Harling. It was upon her decks that I learned the ways of the sea, the “old-school” ways. And there I got the knick-name: "Pirate". That’s a story for more private venue. I shall lift one to her memory tonight for sure.

A schooner wreck is always a sad story PoCA - especially sad to hear that she was enroute to be restored, only to end up on the rocks. Sorry to hear it was also your loss too.

I saw the video of her breaking up on last night's local evening news. I commented to my wife that there didn't seem to be much effort to save her - or it was just too expensive to do so.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

She looks like a really nice boat, what a shame. I though it interesting that the owners prime concern under those circumstances was to keep the fuel from getting into the bay. I hate to admit it but my priorities probably would have been elsewhere. I'll have drink to him and the boat tonight.

My last summer in the Navy I worked weekends on the schooner Diosa del Mar. And like the Truant she ended up on the rocks, at Catalina Island off the coast of California. It was a lost to be morned.
I enjoy crewing on her as she took passengers out to the Islands for a weekend trip. Last sailed on her Labor day of '78; Retired from the Navy Jan '79.
A lot of ships that I have sailed on over the years are no longer in service. And that is the kindest way of putting it.
