When should you should reef? When the first thought of whether you should or not, is the time when you should reef and not later.

Yep, unless it's a planing hull, all you're doing is digging a deeper hole once ya reach hull speed. The only exception is with an old girl like mine who gains an extra 5' of WL when she sails on her ear.
