Looking for Tips for Sailing NJ Coast South To Baltimore
I'm looking at purchasing a 35' sloop and sail it down the New Jersey Coast from Highlands, NJ to Annapolis.
I'm interested in any suggested anchorages and information. I mainly sail from Baltimore to Norfolk so have no info on details up North.
There is already at least one good thread on this BUT:
Atlantic Highlands to Manasquan first night
Manasquan to Atlantic City second night.
Cape May third night
All are 1st class inlets...straightforward and generally ok in most weather. You can anchor only in Cape May.
Then...with less than a 55ft. mast...you can go out the back door canal from Cape May up the Delaware. Start EARLY and try to catch the tide to help you up the bay...it can get nasty when winds and tides are opposed in this shallow water.
Tie up in the C&D canal anchorage and head out the next morning for Annapolis. A five day (sailing in daylight only) trip if good weather. Probably a 2.5 day trip if you have crew and keep going 24 hrs. a day.
I was looking at a chart, I never realized that Cape May is South of Baltimore.
Michael - I've done the trip (as have many) and everything Cam said above is spot on except I believe you can anchor in Absecon Inlet (Atlantic City) too. Normally you come into the inlet, go down a little ways, turn left and stay at the Trump Marina or one of the other marina's there. If you straight instead I believe you can anchor.
I think you can anchor off to the right in the AC inlet if you don't want to go to Trumps. Instead of turning laft for Trumps turn right. Also, if the weather is good you can get into Great Egg Harbor inlet just above Ocean City. That is where I'm at. I would not do it in bad weather or at night, quite a bit a shoaling there.
Finally, don't cut the corner at Cape May if you need to go around. There is a lot of shoaling in near shore. Go around B4 I think it is. As Cam mentioned you can save a few hours if you can fit through the Cape May canal. Good luck.
