I think he was talking about sailing on a lake, the COLREGS don't apply. He needs to look at US Inland Rules.

I would always sail around a marked course if possible. But, the little club near my home always sets up their course directly in front of the entrance to the channel that leads to my slip.
I suppose that they assume that everyone motors back to their slip all the time, but dammit, sometimes, when the conditions are right, I like to sail right up to my lift.

I like to sail through bridges and have had other boaters get all pushed out of shape.

Since when did running your engine become mandatory because someone else may be inconvenienced?

Knothead-

At least here, where I am, some of the bridges require that you motor through them. In particular, the SWING BRIDGE, requires all sailboats to pass under motor, with their sails DOWN.

When you're dealing with multiple vessels at once, as in you and a series of rowing shells, the rules do not apply as you are in a "special circumstances" situation. The Rules deal with two ships or vessels meeting in some fashion.

In your situation, I'd advise avoiding alterations of course to port and play it by ear after that.

The rules still apply. You must allow for the special circumstances. Each vessel is a different and unique situation.
