End of an era

I guess this marks the end of an era. The Kitty Hawk is making its last sail. Pretty incredible history.

USS Kitty Hawk says sayonara - CNN.com

USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63)

Geez I almost had a heart attack, thought you were going to exit from the moderator position. Or sell the Catalina

Glad it is just the Kitty Hawk, next time chose a less threatening title...

I certainly don't constitute an era!!!!! I am not that old. Now Cam, on the other hand, he might be considered an era...

CD, I had no idea. I was part of Operation Frequent Wind, the Kitty hawk was not there but her sister ships were. I wound up on the Midway. It is sad to see that these old girls are going. They served well, let them be remembered in reverence.

blt2ski will become famous soon enough
Not that I pay much attention to naval ships, other than the ones coming thru puget sound, are these older carriers etc being replaced? or just mothballing/scrapping them all? Hopefully replacing to some degree, otherwise they may end up like Wa St's ferry system, all old boats, rusting thru, no money etc to replace them, then we all lose!

I've seen the Carrier that is kept in Everett come in and out a few times, big boat, but not nearly as BIG as some of the cruise ships going in and out of the sound etc!

You know that you are getting old when every ship you have sailed on while in the Navy are no longer in service and not even mentioned in the latest Jane's.

Don't know about USS Enterprize, but USS Midway is safe and sound and resting comfortably in her retirement

IIRC the USS Enterprise is still on active duty. It is due to be retired in ~2014 and replaced by the USS Gerald R Ford.
