My new favorite sailing picture

Sunday, on Pamlico Sound. My youngest daughter, Hannah, who turns 8 in June is at the helm.

(this one is reduced for the net; I have it at much higher res)

uspirate, no lifelines on my V-21 either, too small I guess. Cute little thing, looks like she's having a blast.

No. I have thought about adding them and probably should as I have started sailing in bigger water. No major crossings in my plans, but that bit of water over Hannah's shoulder isn't always that calm. In all other directions I was within 2 or 3 miles of shore and most of the time I was within a mile of at least one shore. Out on that horizon it is a long way out to Hatteras and Ocracoke and through the gap between them its even further to Africa...

I did think about stricter safety guidelines. I should probably clip in all the time when I am the only adult. We had great weather and there was abundant safety boat presence - USCG, state and local enforcement were all around making sure boats were licensed, captains were sober and fishing regulations were being followed. A few people didn't have a very nice holiday.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
