I'd suggest getting a sailboat first - they usually come with a mast (included). Try BoatDesign.net

It would help if you said what year Hunter 31 you had. IMHO, buying a sailboat without a mast and standing rigging is generally a losing proposition, since replacing the spar and standing rigging can cost more than the boat is often worth.

You really need to get a mast that is designed or close to the design specifications for your boat. Your best bet would be to try and find a storm damaged boat of the same make and model that has serious hull damage, but an intact rig and buy the boat or the rig.

This is especially true, if it is a more recent model Hunter, with the B&R backstay-less rig with swept spreaders.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
