North Carolina fire

There was a pretty heavy haze over the NJ coast on Saturday apparently from a large fire in North Carolina. The haze lingered for most of the day and clearly smelled of fire. Were you guys in NC affected also or did you just enjoy it blowing up the coast?

The smoke came inland to Raleigh a few days ago. It was bad enough that a lot of outdoor activities were shut down due to air quality. It's shifted back now. It was started by a lightning strike on June 1st.

So far, 41,000 acres have burned, and the fire is 60% controlled, according to the noon news.

They gave notice of fires in VA. and NC. over WX all weekend. It was hazy Saturday south of Pooles Island. I couldn't smell smoke, but the horizon was bad looking south.

This fire has been going on for quite a while...and when the wind has been "right" the smoke here has been like FOG...requiring boats to use radar for navigation. We had 18 boats cancel a club trip here yesterday due to the smoke. Thankfully we did finally have some thunderstorms come through last night and put a bit of a damper on things...but we really need some steady heavy rain. In the meantime...Jersey...you will have to put up with us. Turnabout is fair play!!

No more tomatoes for you! It was hard to tell in NJ if there was fog also but visibility was variable and down most of the day. Lots of people checking their boats for fire though.

It was definately bad here in Raleigh for about a day and a half last week. I usually ride my bike to work but i drove those two days. We went to Oriental last weekend and it was clear there because the winds had shifted. A lot of what we're smelling is smoldering pete moss. They are having a hard time extinguishing it because of this.

We get hit with the smoke here in Va Beach everytime the wind shifts out of the southwest. It's pretty bad, don't even want to go outdoors. Besides the original fire in NC there is also a fire in the Dismal swamp. It was started by a dozer that caught on fire while clearing brush. I can imagine traveling through the ditch right now is somewhat of a task.
