Sextant on Craig's list

Sextant, HO 211, 260, & 229, + Nautical Books

I do not know the person selling this, but remember several members where looking for used sextants; seems like a pretty good deal.

Do you know how to check it out for index error, etc.? A sextant that has been dropped can look fine, but functionally can be damaged beyond repair.

If you haven't used on before, find someone who has and go to check it out.

Looks like a Tamaya box but I can't tell if the sextant is Tamaya. Looks to have a larger scope on it as well. Good selection of tables, too. It'd be worth re-reading the section in Bowditch on sextant adjustment-about five minutes with it will reveal whether it's bent or not.

Sailaway, Yes, I have a Tamaya myself and the box looks a lot like mine but the Sextant looks like a plath to me. It doesn't look at all like a Tamaya. I wasn't interested in this for myself, I just remebered a few members were learning on plastic and wanted a metal sextant.

If it passes muster and the optics are clean, unscratched, etc., it's a nice deal for the price.

I didn't even notice the price first time through. Val's right, that's a steal. In fact, that's about what you'd probably pay for a bent sextant suitable only for making a lamp or other decoration out of. You've got a couple hundred in books alone at retail.

I've bought a new Astra IIIB and a used Freiberger sextant in the last five years, so I might be a little more current on this than most!

I'll tell you something, though: For something deemed "useless", they are certainly holding their value on the used market. If I found a $200 Astra IIIB in "never used" condition (it can go that way and does), I would own three (hey, my son doesn't have one of his own!)
