I am going with the family to Davis, NC to visit my dad 7/1 to 7/5. This is right there on the mainland where you take the ferry over to Lookout. Anybody going to be in the area? Can I buy someone a beer in trade for some sailing stories?
Hey Jacky!
Just saw this after not being around for a few days. I'm headed down to Oriental on either the first or second, not quite sure just yet. I'll be getting things ready for our sail up to New Bern for the 4th. You guys should take a detour through Oriental and we'll take the boat out. Too early to tell what the weather will be like but the only thing that will stop me is lightning.
I'll see if i can figure out exactly when i'll be coming down but i think i'll be there early in the week and then Jayme and some friends are coming to town Thursday... So maybe sometime during the week. You can see the bilge in person... better than photos.
Hey John, you still on the Neuse somewhere? Looks like a bit of sailing is in the works for sometime next week. We can leave the politics at the dock. I'm thinking maybe Wednesday if i'm able to get in later on Tues.
The one unknown is that i am having my starter worked on this week. It should be fixed by this weekend but i guess there is a slim chance that it could be delayed. The starter itself is fine but the factory installed wiring is not supplying enough voltage to the starter... why they didn't use a larger guage i don't know. Probably to save money. Anyway... i don't expect this to be a problem though.
The kids have been bugging me about heading down to the coast; that looks like a possible good time for all. I'll have to see how that plan sells at home. They had a lot of fun at Washington, NC, last time out (a few weeks ago) and I haven't been to Oriental yet.
Ha... and as a bonus you can see the new Groco HF head pumping mechanism along with all the holding tank plumbing i replaced. THAT was a pain in the ass. I hadn't even planned on doing the head project last trip... but you know how when you start taking things apart and before you know it you have everything completely disassembled? That was us. We absolutely HAD to get it back together before driving home... which we did, but unfortunately it was 3am before we rolled into town. We were beat after the drive but now we have a new system again.
My boat is currently in new bern, but I want to move it to oriental, hopefully as early as july 1. Can anyone give me a recommendation of a place to keep the boat? Main considerations are proximity to main sailing grounds and price. I dont mind if I'm not near town.
Are you looking for a "permanent" slip or just transient? I would say that there are a few places around town that you could consider... all of which are directly accessible to the Neuse River as well as being right on the ICW.
Here is a link that covers all marine services in Oriental... a good link to hold onto: Visit Oriental, NC!
As for anchoring... head under the bridge (45' clearance)... that is Greens Creek and is a nice area. As you cross under the bridge Greens Creek is to the left and Smith Creek is to the right. The area in the middle is VERY shallow so watch the point there. The winds have been primarily from the SW so the water is low.
If I go, what is the best ramp? I don't want to go to wherever the regatta is. I can launch just about anywhere. I draft just under a foot with the keel/CB up (the N17 claims 9", but I have a zinc on my steel CB and can't crank it quite all the way in). On the top side, I am working on new mast supports so I can motor easily with my mast down to let me use more ramps, like the one near "downtown" in Washington, NC. I should be able to get my clearance down to about 6'. My little 22' mast can be stepped by one confident (more important than strength) person if the boat is beached reasonably well.
Joel,
i am slowly working the deal and trying to find a way to get a "Kitchen pass" for Wednesday. (For those that don't know, a "kitchen pass" is where one gets a pass to get away from the family for a bit with being in trouble for abandonment.) Where do you keep At Last in Oriental? I am laying out my master plan and location is one of the variables.
We're up Greens Creek, about 200 yards or so on the port side. If you're coming through town on 55E you would cross over the bridge and take a right into the Mainsail Point neighborhood. It's about a 50 minute commute from Beaufort including the ferry ride from Cherry Branch to Minesott Beach.
A kitchen pass.... that's like a "get out of jail for free" card!
I believe he is on Smith Creek, on the east bank. Don't quote me though.
Andy, the only ramp I'm aware of, is also on Smith Creek. You take a right on Hodges St, and then a left and it dead-ends at the ramp. There are many B&B's around, as well as the Oriental Hotel, if you don't want to cram everyone on the boat.
I don't think the kids are quite ready to boat camp just yet. Camping is an accurate description on the N17; it has the tiny cabin but it isn't fitted out. I did little Washington as a long day trip from Raleigh (264 rocks!) but that would mean not seeing the fireworks. Still kinda up in the air.
Andy- John is correct and his directions are good... The Wildlife Boat Access is the only place in town for trailer sailors but there is plenty of room to park and get around. It's located right at the foot of the bridge... to the right side as you are coming through town. It's the last right before you get to the bridge. As for clearance, there are no issues except for the 45' bridge. Bring your boat, we'll race!
Barring unforeseen events, I am pretty sure I will be there. We're gonna race? As long as it includes a stretch of water over a foot but under two I may have a chance.
Well... i would expect it to be fairly busy on the water but not too crazy. Sat night is the busiest because of the fireworks but during the day the boat traffic isn't too much of an issue since there is plenty of room out there. It's probably the busiest week in Oriental though because of the Croaker Festival. As for getting around on the water: The only areas you really have to worry about are the point accross from the wildlife ramp... very shallow there... as well as the starboard side of the channel as you are going out into the Neuse River. I would imagine with your boat it won't be much of an issue though. I took our O'Day 22 in these areas all the time and we only drew 2'.
