How far from Mackinac Island to Long Island

Ok, without pulling out numerous charts etc., anybody have an idea of how far it is by water from Mackinac Island to Long Island by way of St. Laurence Seaway? I know some guys that are doing the delivery of a boat back from the chicago-mac race and I'm just trying to get an idea of how long of a trip they've got.

It would be much, much shorter if the Erie Canal was an option.
Are you sure they are going all of the way up and around using the St. Lawrence? I know some people don't like the canal because they have to drop the stick, but it saves a ton of miles.

That's a very long schlepp. Why aren't they going the Erie canal/Hudson river route?? It would be much more direct, although you'd probably have to drop the mast to do it.

Yep, a long trip indeed. Can't do the Erie Canal deal due to draft and rig dimensions. I've offered to run them out some nice warm food when they pass by me in the sound to welcome them back to civilization.

Without looking at charts that has to be at least 1400-1500 miles. These guys must have lots of time or work very cheap to not go thru the canal. The mast would have to come down, but I think that the Erie is a minimum of 12' deep.
Is this one of the super Turbo's with more draft than that?

SCoffshore 07-23-2008 02:26 PM

we'll call it 17' of draft

sailingdog 07-23-2008 02:38 PM

ouch. :) 17' of draft....that's more than Gui's boat.

St. Lawrence it is then! Wow, that is some draft. Mind saying what type of boat it is...other than BIG?
Don't expect them soon. They have lots of rivers and seaway to navigate.

Do a search for Genuine Risk, the boat, not the horse.

Great boat. Line honors this year. Now I understand the draft. A couple of Holland boys did well this year.
