Michigan safe-anchor areas

I have heard that the state of Michigan has established, or is establishing, a series of safe-anchorage sites on the Great Lakes surrounding it. From what I understand, these spots are supposedly places where boats on the Lakes can anchor for the night or take refuge in during bad weather. They are supposedly free of charge, but also have no amenities in them. Does anyone know where additional information on these can be found? Thanks for your help.

Just got back from a week and a half cruise of the northwest Michigan shoreline and am unaware of anything like what you ask about. There are however several anchorages that have excellent protection and holding. Additionally there is one harbor that I know of and probably more that are considered "harbors of refuge". This means that they have to allow you to tie up. This frequently means that you will be rafting with other boats, sometimes three to four deep. Hope this helps.
