mainsail and the luff bolt rope
The bolt rope in my mainsail is 8" shorter than the actual sail luff. I know this because the sail is heavily pleated at the bolt rope, mostly at the bottom, just above where the rope is sewn in. Is this normal?

No... the bolt rope has shrunk... it needs to be released and re-sewn, if not replaced.

Thanks, I have released it now and resewn. The sail looks much better now. Should I do the same thing with the foot?

Probably, given that it is probably using the same rope as the luff did, it has probably shrunk to the same degree.
