Sailing Tahoe CA.

Any one from the Tahoe basin? I am new to sailing and would like to meet some folks who sail on the lake and know it's ins and outs.

If you got some time please see my post in the "orphan boats" section, I feel that area don't get much traffic and my post my just collect dust.

Thanks for you're time.

Cope44,

I was at Tahoe last year and wanted to go sailing bad. Looked like a great place, wide open lots of wind. First I tried to find a place to rent a bareboat, no luck. Then I placed an ad on craigslist offering to pay for use of someones boat. No response. I also went down to the docks periodically during the day just to see if someone would take me out. Again, no luck. Even offered to crew in the nightly races.

In short I found the sailors there to not be vary hospitable. Hope you have better luck.

Thanks Sailking

Thanks thats about what I figured. I went to every marina in the area with the same experience as you. I know most "sailors" on Tahoe are in a much higher tax bracket than me

If you decide to come back in the future drop me a line, You're welcome on my boat "Solo" any time.

Any one had a better Tahoe experience?

On a lighter note, I will be putting "Solo" on the water tomorrow for the first time! If she dose not sink, or kill me I'll be posting picks!

Thanks again.

Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place and I can only imagine what the sailing is like. Down at the southern end there is a cove with a stone house on top of a rock island. I saw a couple of sailboats anchored there. Looked like a nice place to overnight.

Cope, I am sure I'll be back, have relatives in Sac. that visit regularly. And I will definitely take you up on your offer. Good luck with your launch.

Well I'm off to bump my post count to ten so I can share some picks with everyone.

Thanks again for looking.

Oooh...pretty photos... then again, it's pretty tough to screw up photos with the right subject material though... Mountain top lakes are among such subjects...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Though Mrs. Knothead and I are former members of the Lake Tahoe Yacht Club, (long story), neither of us have ever set sail there.
We were both Flatlanders but truly love the mountains. I used to drive a semi into Tahoe on a regular basis. I never tired of the view or the ride.

Hmmm...I have a trailerable boat. So maybe someday.

Beautiful pictures.

One thing to consider is anchorage. IIRC, the average depth of Tahoe is 1000 ft and the bottom, if you bring a mile of rode, isn't always good holding. So don't count on dropping the hook in an emergency. Mountain lake sailing is unspeakably gorgeous but the winds are capricious, the storms come from nowhere, and every shore is a lee shore. Enjoy and be safe! I envy you for having a lake with some water left in it.
