Dling....dling.....boooooooo.....dling....dling... .

Thought you would like to see this...

On a beautiful day last week of August....we needed to continue our journey..so we departed, albeit looking like milk...

We really needed to go...reports said it was only coastal...and besides fred needs the experience.

yeah right....5 and half hours in it....coastal all right....10 miles deep....and it got worse outside..was so thick, and dense we got wet just being outside.

The kids had a blast, and so did the wife...officially Mrs. DLING...DLING....(but don't go calling her that)..

This is inside the Vilamoura Marina!

this guy in front of me has radar, and he said no targets visible...I followed him..we lost him later, but we were heading the same direction...he kinda guided us with the bell and horn.

bye bye!!

Fred did the bow watch....he loved it so much

visibility was really really worse than the photos show

I steered and blew the air horn...stop every 5 minutes to hear the noises..

once you stop, and stop moving..the air density really freaks you out.

once we got to 6 miles off the coast, it did not improve, so everyone gets the PFD, and we push on...

Mrs. DLING DLING having fun...

Luis didn't like the wet air, so he went to what he calls "the tent"...do not disturb me now Dada...

Fred sat down after 2 hours...

the side view..

Get lost Dad..this is my office...

finally after 5 hours, we broke off the fog, the sun was shining and was hot again....time for Luis to play like Fred in the boom swing, except he stays inside..

not outside

time to get some sun....fog is depressive we had arrived, thank you Mr. GPS...

Luis wanted to drive too...

Coupla questions:
In the pic of you sitting on the rail, your lifeline looks loose to me. Am I overtightening my lines or are yours loose?
In one of the bow pics there is a round thing around the upper lifeline about 2 feet back from the pulpit. What is that?

thanks

Ed

Ed!!!!!! dear friend how's the new boat?? happy??

No, the life lines are not lose, the life line gate is open in that photo, (not sure of the name in English), so we can enter the boat from the dock, and when it opens the lines deflex. It's meant to be like that. When closed, the line tensions the pushpit to the pullpit. There are stops at the gate so the lines don't come off.

Those round things are Harken disks to help the genoa pass to the outside of the lifelines without getting snagged, and protects the sail from schaffe also as it passes. This is because my genoas can work inside or outside the life lines as the pullpit is open. It is also used, sometimes as spreader protections on smaller boats.

It's Harken part number 285 see here

My lifelines are tensioned whether the gate is open or closed. The gate line is totally separate from the rest of the lifelines.

Been busy all summer fixing and modifying all kinds of small stuff. Nothing major. Had a nice sail yesterday. Finally got the whisker pole back with a new control line so I tried wind n wing with the pole. Not too difficult to do so I think I'll keep it. Without really trimming it right (jib not all the way out, boom not all the way over) we were doing 3 k in 3 k winds almost dead downwind. We were running out of searoom so I couldn't really trim it well.
Spent 8 hours putting 2 coats of varnish on one toe rail. Still have the other toe rail, the bow & stern plus the cockpit coaming to do! But it looks good, but it looks good, but it looks good, but it looks good.

Looks like you had a fine summer cruise.

Look me up when you come to DTE

Ed

Oh, almost forgot, what's that thing you're blowing?

Ed, where the hell do you sail??? You never saw those??

It's an air horn or blaster, operated by the mouth..relies on vibration

Cheap, noisy, and very light...besides, not relying on anything else but your breath, it never fails..unlike the fancy electronic gizmos you see around..

click bellow for a similar to the one I have.

If you think that is cool, you'll love this:

It's called an EcoHorn, and uses a pump to pressurize the bottle and runs off of the compressed air. Loud as hell.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
