Flares on my New to me 1987 Pearson were up to date, however the manufacture date on my fire extinguishers was 1985. Non-refillable with no guage.

Come to think of it, my FE's were toast too! They at least had guages, showing non usable!

Ohwell, at least the folks with the comments of how to dispose of the dead flares have stopped, and back to the "how were your flares?" folks have started to respond with fun ages etc.

My 1977 Santana 20 had handheld flares with wooden handles with a 1979 expiration date when I bought it last year. It had ariel flares with a 1986 date. Fire ext. were good. All the flares were in unopened clean packages, and looked fine.

I was given a metal box containing U.S. Navy flares around 1970. The date on the box was 1960. I carried them as back ups for about 30 years. In 1990 I tried one in the back yard and it worked like new.

Old out of date flares make good training aids in the use of flares. Just let the boats around you and the Coast Guard that you are conducting training with old flare and will be setting XX amount off while doing so.
Then when you are finished let everyone and the Coast Guard that you have completed the training.

Sometimes the P O is trading up, and takes the new flares with him. I once bought a 1976 O'day which had old flares, dead fire extinguisher, and an old radio. Not surprising, when I looked for the manual to help me get the old radio to work, I found a radio manual with the 6 month old purchase reciept and warranty card stapled in it!

In Canada I believe it is illegal anytime to shoot off old red flares even if you let boats around you know. You might not end up in jail if you fired them off precisely at midnight on New Years Eve to do a practice and get rid of the old ones.
