Guzzwell was writing (and sailing) at a time when anything that weighed less than a Colin Archer tub was considered dangerously underbuilt. New construction techniques (like those pioneered and proven by boats like Trekka) have created boats that make Guzzwell's seem heavy. It's all relative. It depends to a large extent on your style of sailing - do you want to "get there" or do you want to have a smoother, slower ride? The Dashew's "Circumnavigator's Handbook" might be a helpful read for you.
