it kinda depends what kind of sailing you're looking to do, which you didn't really specify. For racing and cruising combined the Chesapeake and the Northeast are hard to beat. I live in RI and love it, although the winters are a little too long for me. Sailing season is generally from May 1 through end of October if you have a bigger boat and/or a sheltered mooring or slip. I have neither so my boat goes in June 1 and comes out end of Sept, to protect it from the nor'easters.
