Tried to tune in Herb Hilgenberg on 12359 on sunday@ 3-4 oclock. I was able to pick him up but very poorly. Here is my question-- I am in Jacksonville Fl. and I believe herb is in the Bahamas or am I wrong about that. Since reception with the ssb is dependent on time of day and distance from the source and weather conditions it is suggested that one try different frequencies to listen to broadcasts. How do I do that if herb is only broadcasting on one frequency? I am not sure if something is wrong with ssb and tuner or if I am not skilled enough to capture the signal properly.

Carisea:

You should be able to hear Herb from Jax, altho'' you may not have the time correct. Here''s the blurb off Herb''s website

"South Bound II, Herb, provides a daily ship-routing/weather forecasting service, as a hobby, on marine HF/SSB frequency 12359.0, starting at 2000 UTC until 2200 UTC or until completion of traffic. 8294.0 and 16531.0 are used as alternate frequencies as announced from time to time, subject to propagation."

That''s pretty early on 12 Megs and you may need to wait a while to pick him up (2100Z or so) altho'' I am surprised that is the case. Herb transmits from a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Were he in the Bahamas, you would probably not hear him at all.

As a suggestion, you might try to listen to him on another boat''s rig at the same time as yours, to compare signal strengths.

Jack

You should be able to pick up herb from the bahamas. most likely after 2100 utc.
Herb devotes his life to this "hobby"
he likes to talk to people going offshore and not short trips and coastal cruising. if you are going from the bahamas lets say to florida and want an accurate forecast. listen to his net. he will probably speak to a boat either heading away or heading to an area near your location.
Since herb works for free, many cruisers send him a check as a help for him to buy gear etc. many people send him $100-200 per pasage.

Sorry, had to respond.

I remember huddling over the SSB to hear Herb''s comments while being a bit knocked around. He used to be in the Bahamas, but was kicked out due to work permit troubles, from what I understand, so he later transmitted, and now transmits, from Canada.

Sorry to interject, but his transmissions will remain in my memory forever. When hitting on an unexpected bit of bad weather, it was especially important to get a little bit of Herb''s sage advice.

Thanks for the memories.

MaryBeth

MB:

You''ll find Herb''s site - quite a nice one, if a bit full of adulation for Herb - at:

http://hometown.aol.com/hehilgen/myhomepage/vacation.html

I don''t believe Herb ever provided his service from the Bahamas; he was based in Bermuda for some years.

mitch and group,
herb HATES to do his stuff by e-mail.
the best way to talk to him is on the ssb. he says he is too busy to do e-mail .
considering he is routing anywhere from 30-80 boats a day i can believe he has no time.
