Hurricane Omar

Only three days ago I was looking forward to my next BVI sail and blissfully unaware that a hurricane could form in the Caribbean basin and track NE for several days.

My boat is on the hard in the BVI and still in one piece, but that status looks like it might change by Saturday and I might be the owner of a number of boat parts and nought else.

First off, I will keep my fingers crossed and fervently hope that everyone in the path of Omar remains safe and sound and secondly (with some self-interest) I hope that property damage will remain at a minimum! Since the BVI have seen so much rain in the recent weeks I fear that there will be a lot more land-based damage from Omar, who is approaching from the SW and thus will hit the more populated shores.

Fingers crossed for you on that Zanshin. Hope your fears are unfounded.

Cheers

Stay safe Zan...looks like a weak Cat2 when it gets to you.
Hope anyone who decided to head offshore on Rt.66 early is monitoring this and makes a sharp turn to starboard. Here's the Wunderground latest map:

Keeping our fingers crossed.
Hope that it misses both you and the boat.

Sorry to have been unclear - I'm currently safe and sound (but cold and wet) in Germany and am watching all this from afar. People like FarCry, on the other hand are going to see all this up and close personal and I am keeping my fingers crossed. I'll try to do the same with my toes later, but it would look rather strange if I did so now in the office.

I just saw a projection which has the eye traveling to the east of the Sir Francis Drake channel, so the wind speeds on the southern side of Tortola might only be in the 60's - giving me hope that damage to the main island might be limited.

Thans for the update Zan. Is the boat at V. Gorda yacht yard again? Should be OK there.

FarCry...where's your boat at? On the hard or in the water?? All best to ya!!

My boat is now at Nanny Cay - given the current storm track it might be marginally safer than on VG (Although the church that rises over the VGYH boatyard might give hope to many). I now have the Nanny Cay Webcam on my one system here and do a refresh every couple of minutes. It never points at the yard but the waters still look reasonably calm and I don't see any dinghies flying by yet so I am not yet in worry mode. Just wish I had hurricane insurance...

A had a short note from FarCry a while back stating that he was preparing for the storm.

Zan,
I don't mean to tell you what to do, but maybe if you posted more pictures of those two young lady friends of yours... well, maybe it would bring you good luck. What the heck. It's worth a try. I don't care either way... but you never know. Why don't you go ahead and post those pictures right now.

Cam,
FarCry is sort of in it's slip. She is pulled out from the dock with lines running everywhere. There is a small storm surge predicted (2') and the only real concern is the wind speed. Currently Omar has a very small area with hurricane force winds. The marina I keep her in is the most protected on St Thomas and she is within twenty yards of the mangroves on shore. I have done all that I could to protect FarCry and my home above the harbor. Mother Nature gets to decide what happens next. Right now it is raining and gusty and obvioulsy my internet connection is still connected.

Thanks to all who are trying to cross fingers and toes.
