OMG - We're going!

So we were planning on leaving to go cruising with our kids in July of 2009. After spending a week and a half on our trip from Lake Champlain to the Long Island Sound, and several weeks on our boat over the Summer, we decided to move up the date to Thanksgiving of this year! I can't believe this is actually going to happen!

I'm going to have many questions over the next few weeks, but I'd like to start out with a big one. Does anyone have an itemized list of "to-do items" when leaving to go cruising? For example, mail forwarding, bank accounts, house stuff, kids schooling, etc.?

Thanks!!

labatt,

I'm so sorry to hear about your predicament...;)

I think you'll need to be like Santa; make a list yourself and check it twice. Remember, any stress (even good stress) is still stress on you and the family.

So, take a deep breath. Things will get better!:)

I traveled a lot when I was Active Duty. The "checklists" for leaving and arriving were BS and a pain in the a&&. I ended up having to make a new list myself each time, and each time it was different. I found it easiest to take the list with me everywhere so I could add to it as I remembered new things. Obviously, I still had to accomplish the military checklists.

Be safe and stay focused, because the rest of us are fighting over the slight chance you might want crew.:D

I'm jealous too.

Congratulations! Please share your checklists and other experiences so those of us who come after you may learn.

We accomplished step 1 this year -- got the boat. Now for step 2 -- going.

Very, very jealous.

Having met you and the lovely Ms and seen 1 of the kids at Liberty Landing a couple of weeks ago, Joan and I wish you well and are delighted that things fell appropriately into place. This is a good time to leave the current mess behind and get to the basics of the family and the ocean. Bless you four.

I recall a number of lists but think that between Lin/Larry Pardy and Beth Leonard's books and articles I have seen a setting out list. I'll check around this weekend and let you know.

Let me know if we can help with anything while you are in Albany as we can get to and from Branford relatively easily. Best to you all - !!!

Labatt...congrats! Are you gonna try to get some southing in before Thanksgiving? I can tell you it is darn cold in the Chesapeake by 11/15!
I don't have any lists...but happy to help on specific stuff as you get to it.
All good wishes!

Chris - Just got excited for you and plowed through the library. Suggest you get Beth Leonard's The Voyager's Handbook, second edition. It has all you've asked covered in it and very detailed appendix sections with resources and websites to get you to further detail. It was my Christmas present last year and it is very solid, factual and based upon Beth and Evan's many miles of voyaging over most of the world's waters. Good value and very valuable.
