Stepping and unstepping

Do a search on 'gin pole'. That's the way most trailed racing boats sub 30 ft raise and lower masts.

We can step the spar on a j80 in about5 minutes total.

If you can't find anything, pm me and I'll get you something.

Cheers,

In general there is nothing fast about doing a keel steped mast

My home made pole is in two sections to keep the lenth down to 12' when it is in transport
I would like to know more?

Hey there,

I just bought a Cal 28,

Can you tell me about the Mast Derrick that you use?

Did you build it from scratch? What does the mast weight?

Thanks

Love your blog..... went through the whole thing....

Two year old thread, but tommays is still around here, so you may get a reply.

On a J24 we use a 19'+ gin pole setup on deck stablized in a tripod fashion with 2 cables going aft and one on the bow

For lifting gear we setup and old boom vang with 3:1 purshase to be able to make the lift buy hand

The J24 requires about 3' of lift to get the mast off the step and clear of the hull so it can be let down and layed flat

When you are putting one back up you need the FULL 19' of lift if you going to have the bridle anywere near the balance point of the mast

(I know this is an old thread but my post count doesn't let me PM tommays...)

Hello,

I've recently acquired a J/24 and I'm looking for info on how to step the mast w/o a crane. You posted a while back about using a gin pole for this job and I'm wondering if you could detail this a bit more for me. I'm having trouble picturing the part where the mast is lowered/raised through the deck.

Thanks,

Re: steppng a mast on a 23 o'day pop top

This isn't a gin-pole config, but an A-frame on my Capri 22... I built it with 3 2.4s, 8 foot long, and they hold together with simple bolts, and wing nuts (so they fold down to 3 boards)... I use the mainsheet tackle to lift the mast from myself with very little effort. Gonna use the same thing on my Capri 25 to haul out this season.

You see on the stern too that I raise the mast up a bit with something sitting on the gudgeons, to support the mast higher than level (to clear the cabintop) before lifting. The opposite apex of the A-frame is secured with a fixed line to the bow cleat. I usually raise the A-frame slightly forward of the mast (2-3 feet), and tie the bottom off on port and starboard (to keep it from slipping on the fiberglass)... my 9 yo daughter can raise and lower the mast this way from the ground pulling on the mainsheet (yes I've done it while keeping shrouds clear during the raising)...

But you say it's keel stepped, not deck stepped? On a 23 footer? really?
