You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Moral of the story: Don't go to Mexico.

This is a sad story, and a cautionary one IMO. I think the average citizen of the US has no concept that this sort of thing happens at all, let alone that it's commonplace.

RIP John.

Well written yes...tragic death yes. But did anyone notice WHO the writer of the story is. None other than David Vann... a less than believable source and the guy who most recently came to fame in the Tin Can Catamaran which broke up shortly after launching on its "around the world" voyage out of SanFrancisco last year.
Do NOT assume what he writes is true.

For those who wish to know more...there is a 1200 post thread on him over at SA... Home built tri... VW Thing... I'll sail the Thing - Sailing Anarchy Forums

And our own little thread here:
http://www.sailnet.com/forums/genera...gue-about.html

It appears Mr. Vann has taken to writing stories rather than making another Tin Can attempt as was promised so we shall have to look elsewhere for this years cold weather entertainment.

You all recognized that the author of the article was David Vann, of Tin Can fame?

Edit: Cam beat me to it...

Sorry, I didnt make the connection between David Vann and the crazy guy with the trimaran before you brought it up.

Is it only the Pacific coast of Mexico (and Guatemala) that is dangerous or one must also be careful in the Caribbean side?
