Unhappy Boat Fire in the news...

BOSTON --Fire investigators are seeking the cause of a fatal boat fire in Boston.

Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald says the body of an adult male was discovered early Thursday after crews extinguished the flames on the 36-foot wooden pleasure boat docked at the Dorchester Yacht Club.

MacDonald says a person on another vessel called 911 at about 12:40 a.m. to report the fire. He says it's not unusual for people to stay overnight on their boats, even at this time of year.

Authorities are working with the yacht club to positively identify the victim. They are not releasing the name of the boat that caught fire.

Am wondering if this was a space heater fire?? Many space heaters are not safe to use on boats. Due to their easy tip overs and not having cutout safety switches for those tip overs.

A man was killed early this morning when a fire tore through a 36-foot wooden motorboat at the Dorchester Yacht Club.

Firefighters rushed to the scene on Playstead Road at 12:42 a.m. after another boater called 911.

"When firefighters pulled up they saw a large boat on fire with flames shooting in the air," said Steve MacDonald, a fire department spokesman. "The firefighters did a good job of confining the fire to just that boat."

Officials are working to positively identify the man who was killed, although MacDonald said they have a good idea of who it was after interviewing other yacht club members. The man owned one of the few old-fashioned wooden boats at the club.

“I knew right away," said member Robert Welch, who described him as “quiet and very well liked.”

The Globe is withholding the man's name until he is positively identified. Welch said the man had been acting as a steward of the club, pumping gas, putting on coffee, and keeping the place clean.

“He was only doing it temporarily,” Welch said. “He was doing a favor.”

Investigators did a preliminary investigation shortly after the blaze but had to wait until daylight before beginning a more in-depth probe, MacDonald said. They plan to interview boaters and examine fuel, electricity, and other potential causes.

"As in any fire investigation, it’s a process of elimination," MacDonald said.

I'm just grabbing from the news, I don't belong to the club but if I see anything I'll be sure to post it up. Sounds like a nice guy, indeed.

There maybe a lesson to be learned here as to the cause of the fire.

I'm afraid that all bad incidents have "lessons learned" in them. This is a very sad story though. Sorry for him and his family.

Some fires, like this one which happened to us about 8 years ago, never get reported. After months of investigation, the cause was never determined.
