I suppose he had no way of knowing whether the pirates had any odd yachtie hostages on board. Also it is not clear how the frigate knew for certain that the boat was manned by pirates, before the crew were approached and started shooting.

However, the Times story is probably incomplete, as it does not say how the fishing dhow was identified as the offending vessel.

I agree with Jim, after seeing related pirate's while in th golf of tonkin while I was in the Navy back during Vietnam, I say just blow then out of the water and don't risk our men & women at all. Justice though a 5" 54 shell is enough.

Keep them safe,

Yes, there could have been hostages on board, I suppose.

The Iranian incident makes me squirm.
They will shoot it out next time, methinks.

A roaming helicopter is a very active discouragement.

Well it is a start... But the LEOs should be more aggressive in eradicating those vermin. Not only at sea but in the ports also.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I am offended by those who want me to be politically correct... But pirates offended me even more. So shoot the foul smelling feces out of the pirates and give the PC police a norwegian sleigh ride.

By the way; the need to use swear words and to cuss, is the sign of a weak mind trying to express itself forcefully.

Of course in times past the British Government was not averse to giving pirates "Letters of Marque" and then proclaiming said pirates as national heroes.
