But that was only as long as they were preying on the ships of enemies, many of the old pirates came out of the privateer ranks. Once they began attacking the ships of england they were considered pirates by england, but that was pretty much true of all nations at the time.

Letters of Marque were given to privateer's by the USA up to and including in WWII. The Last one given out in the US was to an Airship. (blimp)

I think the Brits should have had gunnery practice for the ship and not launch the boats. Then not say anything to anyone. What the pc people don't know won't hurt them.

I hope they seize that boats and sink them - I can't imagine giving the boats back to anyone who will likely be right back at it again. Sends the message that 1) you likely might get killed 2) you likely might get arrested 3) you likely might not ever see your boat again.

I don't even have a sailboat (yet) but I would be avoiding the Suez canal for sure (shame, I would love to see oman/yemen and eritrea). I would be giving this area a 250 mile wide berth as well; especially since to avoid the Suez you would have to be going down around the southern tip of Africa to get back north to Spain and inward.

Speak for yourself there Fartsy. What we're pals now? The whole "Bite Me" thing is so Benny Lava. And anyway, semaphore is the exact reason cell phones were invented. What a PITA.
