Hey Smackdady-- I think its the data roaming charges that might have bit you, check it out with AT&T.

My GPS usage is bult into my monthly data plan.

To ckgreenman- you are correct, a purpose built for long passages is the only way to go, but for local use the iPhone works quite well.

Ok, you got me. do kitten hairs always land facing north when sprinkled on a plate coated with butter???

As for the iPhone I say do it. It you can figure out how to preload it and not download on the fly, that is. Heck I'd probably use my phone too. Although for that type of journey I'd probably use professionally calibrated charts as opposed to the home made ones I use on our lake
