tiller pilot with wheel conversion??
I have an '86 Newport that has a wheel and a tiller mount.

Anyone know if its ok to use a tiller pilot with a wheel?

I was thinking of making a bracket (i am a machinist so it will be well made) to plug into the tiller mount and mounting the pilot to that. My only concern is that it may over (or under) power the wheel.

Any thoughts?

Yes, and it might even be a good idea, provided that the emergency tiller is reasonably easy to operate, and is located in the cockpit, so that you can adjust it/disengage it when required.

Or... Maybe I did not understand your question? I thought you wanted to connect the tiller-pilot to the emergency tiller? I've done that with both a Windvane and a tiller-pilot on a boat with wheel steering, with complete success.

I'm so confused, but than again, I am easily confused.

The problem is how much resistance does the wheel add to the tiller??? If it is a reasonable amount, like a cable steering system, then you can probably use a tiller pilot on a tiller connected to the tiller mount. If the system is fairly high resistance, like a worm gear or hydraulic system, it might not work as well.

Upgrade the tiller pilot
to one made for a heavier boat with a little more draw on the batteries.
