Gennaker pooles..how do they work?

We are thinking on placing a Geenaker poole in our Elan 40 to use a geenaker instead of a traditional chute, I know that for downwinds the chute will be more effective, but I am a little more confident using a Geenaker...and now I am thinking on placing a poole that will go out about 85 cm....(I think that means increasing the J by about 80 cm). What does a geenaker poole exactly do, what are the advantages and disadvantages?
