JimHawkins is on a distinguished road
Two Years Before The Mast is available for free on the internet.
It's a good story, made even more interesting in that the author was so inspired by his experience to become an attorney specializing in defending seamens' rights.

I just this moment finished "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float" by Farley Mowat. It is now one of my favorite sailing books. It is a hilarious, true story of how Mowat bought a Newfoundland schooner to sail to paradise, only the schooner desperately wanted to sink instead and made many attempts to do so.

I highly recommend it. At just under 250 pages (paperback), it's a great weekend read.
