Take 3 years, raise a ton of money by yourself, build your own boat, and try to sail it around the world..... run into 60 knot winds and survive.

Try taking your tub, run into 60 knot winds, go from lying in your bunk to standing on the ceiling in a nano second and back and see how much is left of your tub with training wheels .....

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I suppose you could critique the dozen or so boats forced to retire before Hatfield, in whose boat I have $250, along with a couple of thousand other Canadians.

Yep, I think we're sponser no. 359 on Derek's hull. Maybe if I'd contributed $250 instead of $100 he could have baought stronger spreaders ??

Sounds like he's planning to continue the Open 60 racing... good to hear.

I've often wondered the same thing. But I guess pushing the design envelope is how we get advances in the art.

Those sure are some awesome-looking yachts, aren't they?

Aren't they beautiful ?

Yes, You could put more money and more material into some part... and come in tenth or so, because you're heavy. Isn't that part of the point ?

(Humbly accepting that I haven't sailed such a race either)

Edit: Oh yeah, I also meant to say, aren't the straight-vertical-sides in the aft sections interesting ? Is this something we'll see coming into mainstream designs ? And if so, for good reason or for fashion ?

A lot of the new race boats don't even have tracks for the genoa cars... they use a set of titanium rings set into the deck and use lines to control the fairlead position.
