So you gotta make, what, 1 knot to keep away from the Catalina?

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Close, but the formula to calculate the required speed is a little more difficult. The formula goes something like this: (speed of current + Catalina rate of drift + .5 kts.)

Hey, you left out the additional speed gained by the Catalina when two young boys "whiz" over the transom......

Any thoughts?
I not sure my answer help, but this a little about our Catalina, now understand!!!

This was for fun and learning!! We (my friends and me) love experimenting with boats.

It interesting and fun you ask as we used catalinas!!

Actually 2 Catalina 22's with retractable keels. Bolted together can be something strong.

Of course for experimenting we used Black Pipe as for Gas, seemed strong and we bolted well.

***At this time we were not worried with the integrity of Blah and Blah, Blah. We were testing and did tested!!!!***

Boats were separated and given away to local teenagers later.

We played with Keels, retracted port/starboard or both up/down. Masts with/without keels and center in the middle as most catamarans.

It was sooooooooo fun, we actually invested a lot in Beer and Grilling. Really fun!

I should stop here, but:

It sure is fun! AND!! We going to do it again.

I really love boats, they so fun! Just buy cheap and experiment, give away.

Most of my applications can be transferred to another boat, so the investment not wasted and I not drill holes for things not work. I really hate drilling holes in boats, something not seem correct about that!!

I remember a sailing book explain sails and mentioned how/if sails were/could be made from aluminum they could be very efficient.

It, not take long we hit our friend who build pontoon/flatbottoms for a small roll of aluminum. Interesting how when a good friend is drunk they give away stuff! But, I been there too, long story!

On the aluminium sails;
I thought it was either "The Complete Sailor" by; David Seidman copy right 1995
*OR*
"The Annapolis Book of Seamanship" by; John Rousmaniere copy right 1989
But, I read so much on boat design. I not make a bet!

Someone here many know where it was mentioned ***In general talk!!!!***, as the sails were not believed to be very adjustable. I still believe the sails can work!!

AND, IF, someone want to sh*t on me, that OK, but .........., it those who experiment *that* designed your boat!!!

It may not have come to market until perfected ......... well, maybe when they thought you buy and pay to perfect. Many do that too!!

True this was NOT and WILL NOT be catamaran design, I assume there more hull in the water or wet surface, but, this was/is fun for us!!!! Maybe someone mentioned or boat to Catalina, we never applied for any patent and that not a concern as it was not our boats as far as design.

Boats should be fun!! AND, I just tell what we do as a friend!

I thought it was fun Catalinas were mentioned!

Some make a boat fun and some have heartattackes over scratches. It a personal opinion. I respect both.
