Yacht Club Goes Down

Major bummer. Knickerbocker Yacht Club in Port Washington, NY is closing down due to declining membership and its inability to pay its expenses. It's one of the oldest clubs, it's got a great clubhouse, and an absolutely fantastic location. What a shame. Truly a loss for the sailing community on Long Island Sound.

I grew up and learned to race as a member of Knickerbocker back in the 1960's. It was one of the oldest yacht clubs in the U.S. (third club formed in the U.S. if I remember right.) In those days it was one of the few yacht clubs on Long Island Sound that accepted Jewish and African American members.

Its interesting, there was a big article in the new york Times about Knicerbocker closing. Somehow, in this environment, I would suggest that most poeple would have no sympathy for a closing yacht club. But I sure think its a loss.
