Maybe Honda is having some type of saledue to the week economy.. I noticed Defender has the Honda 2 HP 15" shaft for $745. It weighs under 30lbs so shipping should be reasonable. The 9.9 are around $2100. Too heavy for my dinghy application though.

Search my posts and you can read a review of my Honda 2 longshaft on a 10-foot Portabote in two-foot waves and 15 knots in Lake Ontario last September. It was pretty close to the limit of what I'd want to run in, but I took a seven mile round trip and had no problems. These new small 4-strokes are perfect if you don't care about going on the plane and do enjoy seeing your wife lift an outboard with one hand. I paid about $1,100 at the 2008 boat show, so that's a good deal indeed.
